Hermetics
Understanding the divine reason for the appearance of monotheism, and its advantages over polytheism. Includes a creation story.
In the beginning, there was only one God, one unified divine power and creator of all. Yet He desired more from His own existence. He wished to evolve. So He divided Himself into two pieces, by creating a new vessel of spirit. This vessel was us. Although we came directly from God, we were actually separate from Him. We were His child, in the same way that although we humans come directly from our animal parents, we are not actually them; we are our own new person. With us He openly shared all the wondrous joys of the Light. But soon we became unfulfilled, because we felt like the ultimate charity case. We became depressed because we wished for the ability to create this Light for ourselves so that we could become just like our Father. This is the process of God’s own evolution. Thus in receiving all the joyous Light absolutely for free, we eventually could not take much more of this depressing lack of fulfilment, and so we rejected the Light of God.
At this time, God understood our desire. Therefore He limited himself in order to create a great void. Into this void he placed His great design of the multiverse, and all the emanations of His own power. He created 10 dimensions, arranged into 4 realms. Between (or around) each dimension is a kind of curtain that separates it from the rest. Our planet exists in the lowest of these realms.
So, the vessel had to know separation, and experience the darkness extant in the void, in order to learn to gain true fulfilment and recreate its very own Light and Unity. Thus we moved into the multiverse and in doing so went through a process of separation. We were now able to enter into each of the dimensions created by God. All of the dimensions, even the highest, are below Him. He is the One, the first. The vessel is the second, and below that, ever greater separation incurs.
So this multiverse is in fact a giant playground or university, in which we spirits can experience and learn to become unified divine creators ourselves. This is the ultimate purpose for all of the lives we all lead, for it was our original desire as the vessel, before the creation of the worlds, and indeed the worlds were created for this purpose.
In each of these realms, the separated spirits of the vessel (us) are able to inhabit numerous types of body in order to achieve fulfilment of our original desire. The highest of these bodies is pure spirit, followed by the soul, and then other types of body, and finally the physical body in which we are currently clothed.
From the earliest moment of creation, some parts of the vessel (the unified us) were assigned the highest and most esteemed jobs below God in the multiverse. Other parts of the vessel were assigned the lowest and tiniest jobs such as being cell components or particles of the physical matter. And all the remaining spirits were given jobs in-between. Right now as you read this and I write, we inhabit the human bodies, and take the human form of existence on planet earth, in the lowly dimension of the physical universe.
At first the separation was only into two parts. Now, in the highest dimension of the multiverse, the spirits are separated from God even further, but still not by very much. Then as we move down through each dimension, the separation becomes greater, and the One becomes less knowable and definable to us.
A very rough portrayal of the cosmic order of the separation might look something like this; starting with the One God at the top, and finishing with us humans and animals at the bottom. On each level is displayed the nature of the dimension in bold, followed by the types of beings that inhabit that dimension in coloured italics beneath. As we descend through the dimensions, notice too that the colours descend through the spectrum, from the most vibrant Violet to the least vibrant Red. The upper three dimensions of the multiverse are colourless:

The Cosmic Order of the Multiverse

1 God; 1 Unified realityGod2 - The separated God; God and the vessel; male and female; dualityGod and the vessel of souls; the child of God; us and every thing below God3 - The Supernal Triangle or the Holy TrinityGod, the child of God, and the Light or Holy Spirit between them4 - The four realmsThe highest and most powerful gods and angels5 - The One is knowableThe beings that mediate between the highest and lowest6 - The One becomes indefinableThe lost souls7 - Heavens12 Angels, 12 Olympians, The higher of the separated gods8 - The gate from the heavensThe large pantheons of gods and the fallen angels9 - The formless worldAll kinds of higher magical beings and the animal spirits10 - The world of formsBillions of Humans, Animals and other forms
Note on evolution: (As God is ultimately evolving, all the lower dimensions mirror this evolution by going through separate processes of evolution. We can see the evolution of the One, mirrored in the evolution of our own species, and the way in which cells divide and conjoin to create a new more advanced being. Eventually we will re-evolve back into the One, with an immense new level of power and ability.)

The above table is not fully revised and mainly serves to demonstrate how God is progressively separated as He moves down into the multiverse and through each of the 10 dimensions.
At the bottom of the stack (or the tree of life) we are always looking upward to the beings higher than us for answers. There are also beings lower than us in our own dimension. These are the animals and creatures, for God gave all of them to us to do with as we please. Of course, it is in our better nature and interest that we learn to nurture and care for the lower animals, for after all they are a part of us and we of them, as is the whole earth and everything in all creation. Yet God being the greatest father, also gives us the free will to harm the animals, and he leaves us to suffer the consequences and learn from our mistakes. And in a similar way, we ourselves have been given over to those higher more vibrant beings who sit on above us.
Over our human history we have had the opportunities to worship any of them. But the lower the being we worship, the more separation we maintain from the One God. Therefore monotheism came as the culmination of the old polytheistic religions. The message arrived that we should raise our vibration of consciousness, to one that recognises the true unity of God, instead of being stuck on the mere separated aspects of Him. Now I will run through the above information in more detail to clarify the positive and clear advantages of monotheism over the older polytheism and the invoking and worshipping of lower spirits and gods . . .
In the earliest points of our civilization, we humans had contact with many of the lower gods, beings or angels. Each represents a different emanation of the One God’s power. From these different aspects of God, we learnt or were taught many things. We were given the skills needed to understand and gain a technological power over the elements, and to build great cities and civilisations. Yet because we still had the full sense of separation, we did not understand that we were all connected, and so we continued to fight and war among ourselves, only now we had more power. Thus over the millennia we have progressively used the knowledge of the lower gods to destroy both ourselves and the environment around. Yet long before today, we already got the message of unity. At the time of Moses, or later at the epoch of Jesus, it was time for the human race to realise, that all of the lower gods were just part of the One God, and in order to achieve true unity and goodness, we should pertain only to the One. Most of us however, were not ready to grasp this concept, and we have continued to fight, war and destroy even to this very day. We still worship various aspects of the creator, instead of the One God Himself, and those that do believe they are worshipping the one, do not understand about the different aspects of God, and so this is still more cause for us to go to war in our blindness. Only through worshipping Him and understanding the cosmic order of creation, and that we are all divinely connected, can we achieve Unity of spirit within our souls, instead of separation.
In this human form of existence, we are separated, and our prime purpose is to overcome all our dualities and achieve unity once more. By worshipping only specific separate entities of God, or the lower gods, we are only maintaining that separation. This kind of separation leads to sinfulness. For if we only worship certain aspects (or colours) of the creators Light, we miss the purity and entirety of the Light. Therefore this is the main disadvantage of polytheism. Avatars such as Jesus finally brought the message that there is but One God, and it is He who should be worshipped in full. He spoke of the intimate relationship of the Holy Trinity, and that all are connected, and all are one. The lower aspects of God are merely false idols, and the worship of them leads to a furthering of separated consciousness. Although we have learnt many skills from the lower gods, by continuing to invoke or worship them, we are remaining separate with those skills, and without unity, it means we will only use those skills for self-service, which ultimately leads to self-destruction. For we cannot truly serve our self without serving the whole, and in order to serve the whole, we must serve one another equally.
So we learned much from the lower gods, but the time has already long past when the message of the One was delivered to us. Now we know about all the many skills possible by the different aspects of God, it is time to end our separation, and return to full unity. This is the purpose and meaning of monotheism.
With monotheism we will have a clear and united spirit, for we focus on the wholeness of our self and the Light. With polytheism we are separated and unclean for we focus only on certain egotistic aspects (or colours) of ourselves.
