What is Life? : With Mind and Matter and Autobiographical Sketches (Canto)

Nobel laureate Erwin Schrodinger's What is Life? is one of the great science classics of the twentieth century. A distinguished physicist's exploration of the question which lies at the heart of biology, it was written for the layman, but proved one of the spurs to the birth of molecular bi...[more]

New Scientist explores the how the brain makes you believe you are feeling something that isn't real, such as a "rubber hand" and to a great extent explains various experiences described by people who do meditation like Out of Body Experiences. A great and interesting read.

New Scientist, the respected US-based scientific magazine, recently published the results of two separate experiences that indicate OOB-type experiences are 'all in the mind' and do not really exist.

From http://www.newscientist.com/article/dn12531-outofbody-experiences-are-all-in-the-mind.html :

By deliberately scrambling a person's visual and tactile senses, it is now possible to give them an "out-of-body" experience.

Two procedures – which are the first to imitate an out-of-body experience artificially – use cameras to fool people into thinking they are standing or sitting somewhere else in a room. They provide the strongest proof yet that people only imagine floating out of their bodies during surgery or near-death experiences.

By Kevin Poulsen, (C) Wired News

If you're an undiscovered psychic, soothsayer, dowser or medium, time may be running out for you to put your supernatural powers to the test and claim a million dollar prize.

But you already knew that, didn't you?

Ten years after stage magician and avowed skeptic James Randi first offered a seven-figure payday to anyone capable of demonstrating paranormal phenomenon under scientific scrutiny, the 79-year-old clear-eyed curmudgeon is revising the rules of his nonprofit foundation's Million Dollar Challenge to better target high-profile charlatans, and spend less time on unknown psychics, who too often turn out to be delusional instead of deceptive.

'ARE you out of your mind?' is a pretty common query.
But, while the answer to that remains subjective, experts claimed yesterday that our mind is out of us.
They said it existed outside the body as a non-physical 'field'.

Wired magazine in September 2003 covered the visit of the Dalai Lama to the USA, comming up with an excelent article on science and buddhism. It starts off with:

BOSTON -- Dressed in crimson robes and matching running shoes, the Dalai Lama stood out amid the tweed-wearing academics last weekend at MIT, yet the Tibetan leader was hardly out of place.

The 68-year-old Nobel Peace Prize winner has said many times that if he hadn't been fated to be a monk, he surely would have been an engineer. He has had a lifelong fascination with science and a natural curiosity for understanding the way things work.

Could the Universe be shaped like a medieval horn? It may sound like a surrealist's dream, but according to Frank Steiner at the University of Ulm in Germany, recent observations hint that the cosmos is stretched out into a long funnel, with a narrow tube at one end flaring out into a bell. It would also mean that space is finite.

From the BBC:

A scientist says he may have found remains of the lost city of Atlantis.

Satellite photos of southern Spain reveal features on the ground appearing to match descriptions made by Greek scholar Plato of the fabled utopia.

Dr Rainer Kuehne thinks the "island" of Atlantis simply referred to a region of the southern Spanish coast destroyed by a flood between 800 BC and 500 BC.

Science? Yes of course!! Hermetics and science are brothers; they both search for the Truth, and they both suffer from the same: the people who talk in their name, poisoning with dogma and beliefs two honorable paths. But this should not be the place for such discussion. Instead, here's a good article about our beloved space in the universe: "Although many more planets are being discovered outside the solar system, none of them looks anything like our own planets. And it is possible that they formed in a completely different way, making our planetary system rather unique."
